UN says 100 children killed or injured in Gaza every day since war resumed | Israel-Palestine conflict news

The United Nations says at least 100 children have been killed or injured every day in Gaza since strikes resumed on March 18, even as the United States continues to support Israel.

The head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, published on X on Saturday, “does not justify the killing of children.”

He said Israel was turning the besieged area into a “no-man’s land” for children and lamented that “young lives” were being “cut short in the war to shape children.”

“This is a stain on our common humanity,” Lazzarini said.

UNICEF said at least 322 children were reported killed after Israel renewed its aggression on March 18, shattering a two-month ceasefire that had been in place since January 19.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said on Monday that the ceasefire had provided “a much-needed lifeline for Gaza’s children and offered hope for a path to recovery”.

“But children are once again plunged into a cycle of deadly violence and deprivation,” he said.

‘Every number representing life’

On the occasion of the annual Palestinian Children’s Day observed on April 5, the Palestinian Ministry of Education said on Saturday that children are among the most targeted victims of the Israeli aggression, with more than 17,000 of them killed in Gaza since October 2023.

“The figures reflect the depth of the tragedy that children are enduring, with each number representing the loss of life, memories and experiences,” the ministry said.

The Palestinian group Hamas also condemned what it said was Israel’s policy of “deliberately killing, detaining and torturing children, as well as depriving them of their basic human rights.”

It warns that Israel’s “impunity encourages further escalation of crimes against Palestinian children.”

“Approximately 1,100 children have been detained by the Israeli army since October 7, 2023, and approximately 39,000 others have lost one or both parents due to violence,” Hamas said in a statement.

It added that the Israeli occupation “targets children through organized crimes, including using them as human shields, depriving them of education, and attempting to isolate their national identity in the territories occupied since 1948 through the manipulation of the curriculum, the spread of crime, and the destruction of values.”

The figures, published in a joint statement by the Palestinian Commission for Detainee Affairs, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society, and the Ademer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, said that Israel has detained 1,200 Palestinian children from the occupied West Bank since October 7, 2023.

The statement said that child detainees are subjected to “torture, starvation, medical neglect and systematic deprivation on a daily basis.”

This recently resulted in the death of the first child prisoner since the start of the Gaza war, Walid Ahmed, 17, from the town of Silwad, northeast of Ramallah, who was killed in Megiddo prison in northern Israel.

According to both Palestinian and Israeli human rights reports, more than 9,500 Palestinians, including women and more than 350 children, are currently being held in harsh conditions in Israeli prisons.

“Since the war in Gaza began, nearly 1.9 million people – including thousands of children – have gone through repeated forced displacement amid bombing, fear and loss.”

Israel has killed more than 50,600 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023, most of them women and children.
